Frequently asked questions
When is a filling necessary?
A filling is needed because a small part of the tooth has been lost through decay or through accidental damage (known as a cavity). Acid erosion through acidic food and drink and abrasion through brushing or teeth grinding can also result in the need for a filling.
Treating this early with a filling will help stop any further damage. Fillings are applied to small and developing cavities to restore your tooth back to its normal shape and prevent any further decay.
How do you know if you need a dental filling?
There are a few signs you may need a filling – this could be a persistent toothache, sudden pain when you bite down, or increased sensitivity to hot and cold. Also if a cavity is visibly noticeable, then you will most likely need a filling.
What are the different types of fillings?
Amalgam fillings
Amalgam fillings are traditional silver fillings made from a combination of metals. Amalgam fillings are very hard-wearing and have proven longevity, lasting for around 20 to 40 years.
Cosmetic White Fillings/Composite Fillings
Composite fillings are often called “white” fillings, but a skilled dentist will match the colour of your teeth to make them look as natural as possible. These are the perfect fillings if you wish the filings to look natural and those that may be more noticeable to yourself and others.
What happens during the procedure?
To begin, we will use a local anaesthetic to numb the tooth and the surrounding area and then remove decayed material away from the tooth.
Once this has all been removed, we will then fill the tooth with the appropriate filling. This will be shaped to look as natural as possible and to not interfere with eating and chewing.
