ROOT CANAL TREATMENT
Harrow and surrounding areas
Root canal treatment (endodontics) is needed when the pulp and nerve of a tooth have been damaged by injury or infected by tooth decay. The procedure can restore a tooth to its natural function and save the tooth from needing extraction.
The tooth’s root contains soft dental pulp and a nerve that extends from the gum into the centre of the tooth. This causes a tooth to ache when severe decay enters and infects the dental pulp, as the sensitive nerve becomes exposed and inflamed.

How Does Root Canal Treatment Work?
Many patients we see are nervous about root canal treatments, as this surgery deals with the most sensitive part of the tooth. To ease anxiety, read about how a root canal works so that you know what to expect during the procedure.
- Numbing – first, the dentist numbs the area using a local anaesthetic.
- Creating an opening – the dentist uses a small tool to create the ‘canal’, a narrow tunnel to reach the infected area.
- Removal – Your dentist will then remove the infected tissue through the canal, before flushing and cleaning the area.
- Filling – Next, the root is filled with a special material, and the opening is filled in and sealed.
The anaesthetic will last for some time after the procedure, and your dentist will advise you on looking after the tooth in the hours and days after you have a root canal treatment.

The root of a tooth contains nerve endings and soft tissue known as dental pulp. If tooth decay penetrates and infects this area of the tooth, you may experience severe toothache and sensitivity.
Root canal therapy is a sequence of procedures to remove this infection from inside the tooth, before sealing the tooth to protect the damaged nerve and restore good oral health.
Root canal treatment is often considered one of the most complex dental procedures and can be time-consuming.

Frequently asked questions
Why would I Need Root Canal Treatment?
If left untreated, a tooth infection can lead to abscesses, which could result in the need for tooth extraction and more costly treatments in the future. Treating an infection with specialist root canal therapy will ease pain in the short term and prevent even more serious problems in the long term.
What Are The Signs I Need Root Canal Treatment?
There are a number of symptoms that indicate you may need a root canal procedure, including.
- Increased tooth sensitivity – including sensitivity to sweets or hot and cold drinks.
- Severe tooth ache and pain.
- Pain when biting down
- Swelling of the face.
If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms please make an appointment with Streatfield Dental Surgery as soon as possible and we will take care of this urgent dental treatment as soon as possible.
How Long Does a Root Canal Take?
Typically, root canal treatment will require more than one visit to our practice, although it can be completed in a single visit depending on the location of the infected root tissue and if the infection is active. We will always discuss and advise the best course of treatment depending on the situation and your dental health.
Is Root Canal Treatment Painful?
By utilizing the latest techniques and state of the art technology, we can ensure that our patients are comfortable throughout all procedures. We are committed to treating all of our patients safely in a calm, relaxing environment. We will always offer a level of dental care that we would expect to be carried out on ourselves.
What Happens After the Treatment?
When we have completed your root canal treatment, we will place a temporary filling over your tooth. This will need to be replaced with a crown as soon as possible. The crown will restore the tooth strength and prevent the chance for bacteria from your mouth to reinfect the tooth.
You may experience some pain for the initial two or three days after the procedure depending on how serious the infection and inflammation was. You will have to avoid chewing on the affected side for this recovery period.
